The contraceptive implant is a small flexible rod inserted just under the skin of the upper arm. It releases a hormone that prevents pregnancy for up to three years.

Implanon insertion is a quick in-clinic procedure performed under local anaesthetic by one of our trained doctors.

Benefits include:

  • Highly effective contraception
  • Long-term protection without daily tablets
  • Rapid return to fertility after removal
  • Suitable for many women who cannot take oestrogen-containing contraception

Our doctors can also safely remove or replace existing implants.

Mirena Intrauterine Device

(IUD)

Mirena insertion is performed by trained GPs at Northpoint Medical Centre.

The Mirena IUD is a small device placed inside the uterus that releases a low dose of hormone. It provides contraception for up to eight years and is also commonly used to treat heavy menstrual bleeding.

Benefits may include:

  • Highly effective long-term contraception
  • Reduced menstrual bleeding and period pain
  • Convenience without daily medication
  • Long duration of action

Before insertion, our doctors will discuss whether Mirena is suitable for you and explain the procedure, benefits, and potential side effects.

What to expect

For both Implanon and Mirena procedures, we recommend booking an initial consultation with one of our doctors. During this appointment we will:

  • Review your medical history
  • Discuss suitable contraceptive options
  • Provide information about the procedure
  • Arrange the insertion appointment if appropriate
